Growing Up Adopted: What I Expect as a Birth Mom

As someone who grew up adopted, I’ve often thought about what it might be like to be a birth mom. It’s a role that carries a lot of love, courage, and important decisions. Here’s what I imagine and hope for as a birth mom, drawing from my own experience and understanding of open adoption.

Understanding Open Adoption

One of the things I’ve learned growing up is how special open adoption can be. In an open adoption, there’s a connection between the birth family and the adoptive family. I believe this allows everyone to share love and support in unique ways. If I were a birth mom, I would want to maintain that connection with my child, giving them the chance to know their story and feel supported.

Making an Informed Choice

If I were considering placing my baby for adoption, I would want to ensure I understand all my options. There is a lot of adoption info available, and it’s important to explore it all. I would read and learn about the different types of adoption and what each one includes. I’d want to feel confident in my decision, knowing I made the best choice for my baby and myself.

Seeking Adoption Help for My Baby

As a birth mom, my immediate concern would be the well-being of my baby. I would seek out local adoption help for my baby to ensure they grow up in a loving and supportive environment. Connecting with a licensed adoption agency could provide me with guidance and information about what to expect in the adoption process. Having a team of supportive people around me would help me feel more secure in my decision.

Celebrating My Child’s Future

As a birth mom, I would hope to celebrate my child’s future, knowing they are in a loving home. My biggest wish would be for them to have all the opportunities to thrive and grow. I’d want to see them happy, whether through letters and pictures, or even visits if we were in an open adoption arrangement. Knowing they were loved and cared for would give me peace.

Creating a Positive Relationship

If possible, I would love for the relationship between my child and me to be positive and open. I think it’s vital for them to feel comfortable coming to me with questions or worries as they grow. By fostering a sense of trust and relationship, I hope we could create a bond where my child understands how much they are loved by both their birth family and their adoptive family.

Growing up adopted has given me a unique perspective on what it means to be a birth mom. I imagine it as a journey filled with love, hope, and the desire to make the best choices for one’s child. Understanding open adoption, seeking adoption info, and finding adoption help for my baby would be central to my experience. Most importantly, I would want my child to know they are cherished and supported every step of the way.
