The First 72 Hours: Recovery, Consent & Communication

  • Birth mother recovery: Prioritize rest, pain management, and clear follow-up instructions.
  • Consent timing: Discuss timing with your attorney/caseworker per Utah and Idaho law. No one should pressure you.
  • Openness touch-point: Agree on first updates (text/photo/short call) that match your plan.

Week 1–2: ICPC, Paperwork & Settling In

  • If out of state: ICPC approval usually takes 5–14 days before baby travels home.
  • Adoptive family tasks: Pediatric appointments, paperwork, safe-sleep setup, and early bonding.
  • Birth mother support: Counseling is available at no cost; ask your counselor to schedule check-ins.

Weeks 3–6: Emotions, Openness & Routine

  • Normalize big feelings: Grief, joy, exhaustion, anxiety can all show up. Build sleep, nutrition, and brief daily walks into the plan.
  • Openness rhythm: Agree on predictable schedule (e.g., weekly text/photo). Predictability = trust.
  • Adoptive family bonding: Skin-to-skin, responsive feeding, and low-stim routines help babies regulate.

Waiting families

Months 2–6: Finalization & Long-Term Support

  • Home visits & finalization: Court finalization typically occurs after required post-placement visits.
  • Update your openness plan: Revisit what’s working; adjust frequency/format with care.
  • Community network: Identify local parent groups in Salt Lake City, Provo, Ogden, St. George (UT) and Boise, Idaho Falls, Pocatello, Twin Falls (ID).
