Can I Change My Mind After Giving My Baby Up for Adoption?
With adoption in Utah, and in many other states, once you sign legal paperwork terminating your parental rights (relinquishment paperwork) your decision is considered final, and you cannot change your mind. For this reason, it is very important that you receive the counseling and education you need during your pregnancy to make sure you make the best decisions for yourself and for your baby.
At Forever Bound Adoption, a local adoption agency in Utah, we have a team of experienced, caring, and knowledgeable expectant parent caseworkers. Our caseworkers are familiar with adoption laws and all aspects of the adoption process, and can help you understand your options and the adoption services available to you. Your caseworker will meet with you regularly throughout your pregnancy to make sure your needs are being met and you have access to the information you need. All expectant parent services are free of charge.
After the birth of your baby, Utah law requires that you wait at least 24 hours to sign relinquishment paperwork. Additionally, you must not be taking any medication that would interfere with your ability to make sound decisions.
Your Forever Bound Adoption caseworker will never require you to sign relinquishment paperwork before you are ready. Prior to the birth of your baby, your caseworker will review all of the legal paperwork you will sign (unless you decide to place after the baby has been born, and then they will still be reviewed with you prior to signing). They will make sure you understand all of the paperwork, and will answer any questions you may have. They will be with you throughout the relinquishment process to make sure you are comfortable with the decisions you make.
While we know that placing your baby for adoption can be very difficult, we also know the joy that can come to you when you know you have done what is best for your future and the future of your child. Please call or text Forever Bound Adoption at (801) 821-1354 and allow us to help you make your adoption experience a positive one for everyone involved.
